Kid in materialistic world

I went to a get together few days back in a resort. We four families. We had three kidoos in the party. Mine is four, one is 3 yrs and another one is 2 yrs who was a girl.

The 3 yrs boy was continuously disturbing his parents. He did not like the atmosphere probably. He wanted to go out from the place, thus was trying to pull his Dad out all the time. Being irritated, my friend handed over a phone to the kid. Immediately his face became more charming with a beautiful smile. He happily started playing some games on his father’s phone. And his mother proudly said, “He is so smart that he learnt using my smartphone when he was hardly 2yrs old. He can spend whole the day playing games on this phone. He even uses my husband’s ipad.”

My kid, what he would do now? He too asked for my mobile phone. Insisted so much that I had to hand over. Could not help! Both the kids sat in a corner, silently kept playing games, watching Youtube Car videos. The poor 2 yrs. girl, she went and sat beside my son and quietly kept watching the videos, the games.

This is a story of most of the little kids nowadays. This makes me feel bad, helpless that what kind of artificial/ materialistic lifestyle they are in. And we console ourselves saying that they are intelligent, smart kids and after sometime we will only try to instill them the tips and tricks how to keep up with the Joneses.

Mother Nature used to be the only option to entertain us in our time. Nostalgic about the way we have grown up! Playing with friends in the ground, having friends who used to share everything, spending time in paddy field, smelling the muddy-fields, growing vegetables, flowers, sitting endless moments under a tree...

Childhood should be all about enjoying the beauty of Mother Nature, giggling and playing without any worries or sadness, in the open, fresh air. Not in mock or materialistic place or things like resort, mobile phone, ipad, television etc.

But, can we make all these accessible to them?  It’s DAMN difficult!...But NOT IMPOSSIBLE too.

Lovely trip to Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Planned to do a world tour, all set with the plots to write few novels, prearranged to pen down a few short stories & articles, intended to have a fishery in the backyard of the farm house in Kaziranga, put one big umbrella, tame cattle and ducks, do lots of plantation, and regularly visit there for fishing, relaxing and to enjoy the chirping, serene, tranquil environment ……..Yes, so many plans my Dad had for after-retirement.

But destiny had some other plans for him.Diabetes’ invaded my father's body, started dwelling comfortably and gradually started ruling his life for more than a decade now. Influenced most of the body parts to make him weaker. His good luck brought him back from the Entrance of Heaven many times. He is a regular visitor of many hospitals, clinics. Pharmacies, be it in Assam, Delhi, Bangalore started offering special discounts as an extremely regular customer. In fact, during the last one year of his service, he was bed ridden most of the time.

He is now in second year of his retirement. His eye-sight does not allow him to read or write, but recently he has completed 5 short stories in a month. Busy bee during the years of his service, he hardly used to get enough time for vacations. He recently wished to travel to Kerala, God’s own country. So, with his all mental strength, we were all set to drive down to Kochi, Alleppey,  Kovalam beach in Kerala, and Kanyakumari and Madurai in Tamil Nadu…..

Our first destination was Kerala….one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia! Tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters in Alleppey, tempting fish fries……the refreshing taste of Tadi, an endless sight of coconut trees. Play with the waves  of the mighty Arabian sea at Kovalam beach, the song of fishermen while pulling the net out of the sea, touch of the syrupy breeze while walking on the beach and  the awesome sight of the waves lashing on the rocks. Above all, take an Ayurvedic massage.

At Kanyakumari, feel yourself in the southern tip and southernmost point of the Indian Subcontinent, enjoy the beauty and depth of the sea, shop from the extremely low priced market. Just Wow!!! Visit Madurai, the temple City…..adore the splendor of the Minakshi Mandir.

Yes…..we enjoyed so much……but it was divine to see my parents enjoying to their fullest. Feeling blessed!!!
